Trail Overview
Van Epps Pass is a 3.7-mile out-and-back route that follows a narrow, rocky road through steep mountain terrain. The trail features numerous off-camber switchbacks, large loose rocks, and extended rock gardens that make for a slow and technical drive. A hiking trailhead is located approximately 0.7 miles into the route. Obstacles become increasingly difficult farther up the trail, including a mandatory rock step near mile 1.0, a large loose boulder in the center of the trail near mile 2.0, and another mandatory 3-foot rock step near mile 2.5. The trail climbs to a clearing near the top of Van Epps Pass before continuing to an impassable windfall at mile 3.6. Drivers are encouraged to turn around at the clearing near the pass to avoid backing up the trail.
Difficulty
Van Epps Pass is a difficult route intended for experienced drivers with high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Watermelon-sized loose rocks, extended rock gardens, multiple rock steps, and steep off-camber switchbacks create a demanding driving experience from start to finish. A mandatory rock step near mile 1.0 and another larger step near mile 2.5 represent the most significant obstacles on the route. The loose boulder near mile 2.0 further complicates vehicle placement and may be impassable for wider rigs. Narrow vehicles have a distinct advantage throughout the trail due to the tight switchbacks and confined corridor. Low-clearance vehicles are not recommended and are likely to sustain undercarriage damage. Recovery equipment is strongly recommended, and as with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is advised.
History
Van Epps Pass traces its origins to the mining boom of the early 1900s, when prospectors carved roads into these mountains to access copper, gold, and silver claims such as the Van Epps, Pickwick, and Benita Mines. The nearby County Line Trail provided an important connection between Kittitas and Chelan counties for miners, pack animals, and travelers crossing the Cascades. As mining activity faded, the old access roads became part of the National Forest transportation system. Efforts to close the area to motorized use in the 1990s were ultimately unsuccessful, helping preserve Van Epps Pass as one of the region's most iconic and technically challenging off-road destinations.
