Trail Overview
Thunder Lakes is a 6.5-mile out-and-back route that begins at the end of Jackman Thunder at a hairpin turn and follows a steep shelf road through mountainous terrain. The trail offers frequent views of surrounding peaks and valleys, making it one of the more scenic drives in the area. Brush encroachment begins around mile 1 and becomes more noticeable farther up the route. Several potholes are present along the road and may pose a challenge for lower-clearance vehicles. Beyond a rock slide at approximately mile 3.8, the road narrows considerably and requires more attention to vehicle placement. The route ends at a moderately sized turnaround with room for several vehicles. Thunder Lakes is open year round to highway legal vehicles only.
Difficulty
Thunder Lakes is generally easier due to a lack of obstacles, while still featuring steep shelf road sections, a narrowing trail corridor, and rougher upper portions. Low-clearance vehicles may struggle with some of the larger potholes, while brush encroachment can result in pinstriping for wider vehicles. The road becomes noticeably narrower around the rock slide at mile 3.8, making careful tire placement more important. While there are no major technical obstacles, the combination of exposure, narrowing road conditions, and rougher terrain can make the trail feel more demanding than its obstacles alone would suggest. Weather conditions such as rain can increase difficulty, particularly where the surface becomes slick. As with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is recommended.
