Trail Overview
Plunging into the vibrant, densely timbered boundaries of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, St Helens Way - FS 8320000 serves as a peaceful, dead-end backcountry spur. The surrounding landscape features a classic Pacific Northwest environment, completely blanketed by a lush, towering evergreen canopy and thick ferns that naturally enclose the pathway. Outdoor recreationists and overland campers intentionally seek out this quiet route to secure one of the numerous dispersed campsites scattered along its shoulders. The driving surface consists of a relatively easy-rolling, single-lane gravel and dirt forest service road that holds a moderate Grade 2 difficulty rating. Although the track begins with a prominent sign warning of limited maintenance for public travel, the overall journey remains quite manageable. The public thoroughfare officially concludes after 2.4 miles, where the route encounters a sturdy locked gate as the property line transitions into private Columbia Land Trust timberland. At this hard barricade, visitors must utilize the available space to reverse course and head back out of the deep woods.
Difficulty
Assigned a moderate Grade 2 difficulty rating, this single-lane gravel forest service road provides a generally smooth and straightforward driving experience. Severe technical hurdles—such as sheer shelf drop-offs, impassable mud bogs, or intimidating rock crawls—are entirely absent from the shaded corridor. The primary terrain challenges are simply occasional surface ruts and several broad, shallow water puddles that span the width of the track following seasonal rains. Navigating these minor degraded sections requires only a modest reduction in speed to preserve traction and maintain passenger comfort. Standard ground clearance is fully sufficient to handle the uneven dirt, glide through the standing water, and comfortably reach the locked boundary gate without risking undercarriage damage.
