Trail Overview
Branching directly off the primary FS 83 transit route, the Smith Creek Trailhead road -FS 8322 functions as a purposeful, out-and-back backcountry spur located within the striking boundaries of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The descending pathway plunges deep into lush, towering evergreen timber, where a vibrant, densely shaded understory closely borders the corridor. Outdoor recreationists, sightseers, and anglers frequently travel this nearly five-mile descent to reach the scenic banks of the Muddy River and the Lower Smith Creek Trailhead, which serves as a highly popular hiking trail destination for those exploring the volcanic landscape. The driving surface consists of a relatively broad gravel and dirt foundation that earns a moderate Grade 3 difficulty rating due to significant water pooling and structural erosion. While the track provides ample width for passing oncoming traffic, the descent demands consistent attention to avoid degraded roadbeds. The route officially concludes at a spacious, forested parking clearing at the trailhead, providing a reliable staging area before visitors must reverse course and climb back up the mountain.
Difficulty
Designated with a moderate Grade 3 difficulty rating, this descending gravel road features a generally stable foundation that is frequently interrupted by demanding water hazards and terrain erosion. Severe off-road hurdles like massive boulder fields or sheer shelf drop-offs are completely absent from the shaded track. Instead, the primary driving challenges are a series of deep, persistent ruts and expansive, road-width water puddles that pool heavily in the shaded forest depressions. While the majority of the route is manageable, the deepest ruts require careful wheel placement to prevent a lower-riding chassis from getting high-centered or dragging through the mud. Maintaining a slow, deliberate speed through the standing water is essential to safely probe the unseen muddy trenches hiding beneath the surface and to ensure reliable, consistent traction during the steep return climb.
