Trail Overview

Smackout Pass offers an easy, scenic gravel route through the lush Colville National Forest, making it perfect for beginners, families, and high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and overland rigs seeking a relaxed day in the wilderness. Beginning in the historic mountain town of Ione, the route transitions quickly from paved streets to well-maintained gravel forest service roads that wind through dense pine stands and past rugged peaks. Adventurers will climb steadily, enjoying views of the Selkirk Mountains and nearby Huckleberry Mountain as they traverse the gentle, rolling terrain. This route is typically passable for standard SUVs, providing a stress-free gateway into Washington's rugged northeastern backcountry. For those looking to extend their journey, an alternative loop climbs up Forest Service Road 421/300 along Jim Creek, though staying on the main Smackout Pass Road is recommended if time is critical. The trail skirts the northern edge of the Big Meadow Lake area, providing opportunities for lakeside stops, dispersed camping, and wildlife viewing of moose and white-tailed deer. The surface is primarily gravel and graded dirt, though seasonal snowpack keeps the pass closed during winter and early spring, making late summer and fall the prime seasons to visit. The loop concludes by descending back toward the Aladdin Valley on the west or returning east to the Pend Oreille River basin, offering a seamless loop with plenty of forest solitude.
