Trail Overview
Purcell Creek (FS 4610000) turns off the main Lava Creek road just off Highway 12 and climbs gently up the mountainside on a wide, well-graded gravel surface that is smooth and easy through open forest. The first stretch is the rewarding part: a single-vehicle turnout camp at 0.8 miles, then the clear highlight at 1.7 miles, a secluded forested pullout that fits multiple vehicles, followed near 1.9 miles by an opening to a valley view with a bed of wildflowers and a fire-ring camp. Past 2 miles, the character changes, growing narrower, rockier, and more washed-out, with 4x4 recommended as the road wraps the mountain past a steep cliff drop-off on the right and through an old burn zone. It dead-ends at 3.6 miles where the road has completely washed away, marked by rocks painted 'Finish,' with just enough room to turn around. Since there are no worthwhile views beyond the last turnout camp, the easy lower section and its dispersed sites are the reason to come.
Difficulty
For its worthwhile lower stretch, the road is wide, well-graded, smooth gravel on a gentle uphill grade, easy for any vehicle. Beyond about 2 miles it degrades into narrower, rockier, washed-out terrain where 4x4 becomes recommended and a steep cliff drop-off adds exposure, but since that upper section offers no real payoff before the washout ends the road at 3.6 miles, the easy lower portion is what defines the recommended drive.
