Trail Overview
This trail is a dirt-based forest road that begins near Sullivan Lake and climbs over 2,000 feet in elevation between Sullivan Mountain and Halls Mountain. The trail has lots of washboard and some major potholes, and you will encounter ruts and wash up to a foot deep. The trail gradually climbs over nearly 14 miles, but the higher you go, the narrower the trail becomes until it is a one-lane shelf road with places to pass. There are multiple mud holes and ledges with large drop-offs, but the trail offers camping along the entire route and some spectacular views of the mountains around you. The trail is meant to connect to the Salmo Lookout trail, but it ends in the final switchback as you come to the sharp turn where tree blowdown has reclaimed the trail. The blowdown is too much for one saw and winch to handle, and a crew will need to be sent out if this is to be cleared. High clearance 4x4 is recommended for this trail. Cell phone service was weak along the trail, and there are no amenities along the trail. The closest services and supplies are approximately 15 miles from the beginning of this trail in Metaline Falls, Washington.
Difficulty
The trail is dirt-based and starts wide; however, the further you climb, the narrower the trail gets. The trail becomes a shelf road with ledges and drop-offs; there are ruts and washouts up to a foot deep, and multiple mud holes. High clearance 4x4 is recommended.
