Trail Overview
Cub Lake is a moderate single-track trail that starts at the intersection with Horsehead Pass and Boiling Lake and rides west to a backcountry campsite at Cub Lake. The trail starts flowy and wide through the lodgepole pines, with bits of embedded rocks, making gradual snaking curves through meadows and forest. The trail feels tight between the bushes at times. It gets chunkier with more rock as it goes west, with a few sections with big embedded rock layers and boulders, and lots of loose rock. There are small drop-offs and stair steps from the embedded rocks, and a shallow rocky stream crossing. The trail was clear of any downfall as of July 2026, as this trail is popular with horseback riders and hikers. You get excellent lake views on both ends of the trail as it goes between Boiling Lake and Cub Lake.
Difficulty
This trail has lots of rock, including rock slabs, loose rock, and boulders, but the trail remains gradual and wide, and through a flat forest floor, with no side-hilling, keeping it a moderate difficulty and not overly difficult. Expect changing conditions and potential for log hazards. Although this trail is moderately easy, it is only accessible by more advanced dirt bike trails.
