Trail Overview
Blue Lake is a 3.7-mile out-and-back route that follows a narrow shelf road through forested terrain to the Blue Lake Trailhead. The road features occasional brush encroachment and glimpses of surrounding peaks and waterfalls through breaks in the trees. A few dispersed campsites can be found along the route, providing opportunities for a quiet overnight stay. Mild water damage is present near the upper end of the road, but the route remains relatively straightforward. The trail ends at the Blue Lake Trailhead parking area, where visitors are rewarded with stunning views of Mount Baker on clear days. Blue Lake is open year-round to highway-legal vehicles.
Difficulty
Blue Lake is generally an easier route, with the primary challenges being its narrow shelf road sections, occasional brush encroachment, and minor water damage near the trailhead. Most high-clearance vehicles should have little difficulty reaching the end of the road, though wider vehicles may encounter some pinstriping in narrower sections. The shelf road can feel exposed in places, but the road surface remains relatively manageable throughout. Weather conditions can increase difficulty, particularly where water-damaged sections become slick. As with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is recommended.
