Trail Overview

Bear Paw is a 2.7-mile out-and-back route that follows a single-lane gravel road through forested terrain. The road features several large potholes and gradually becomes rougher as it gains elevation. Rutted sections and loose rock are encountered near the upper end of the route, requiring more attention than the lower miles. The road ends at a small clearing and hiking trailhead. While the route once continued beyond this point, the former roadway is now heavily overgrown and no longer passable to vehicles. Bear Paw is open year-round to highway-legal vehicles.

Difficulty

Bear Paw is generally easier, but still rough due to its deteriorating road conditions near the upper end of the route. Large potholes, loose rock, and rutted sections can make travel uncomfortable for low-clearance vehicles and may require careful tire placement in some areas. The trail is not highly technical, but the rougher upper section can be enough to discourage passenger cars, particularly when conditions are wet. As with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is recommended.
