Trail Overview

Virginia Highland Horse Trail is a single-track, multi-use trail in Jefferson National Forest, accessed from Route 16 to the west. The trail is open to motorcycles from October 1 through April 1, so plan accordingly. The trail begins at a gated entrance off Route 16 with a big parking lot and a dispersed camp spot at the trailhead. Also, Raccoon Branch Campground is across the road. Be sure to leave no trace. This section of trail is wider and likely an old logging road. There are some ruts and rollers to keep it exciting.

Difficulty

This trail includes some rutted sections, loose rocks, and occasional downed trees that may need to be navigated around or crossed. A couple of turns require maintaining momentum, as losing too much speed could cause the bike to tip over.
