Trail Overview

FS 857 begins off State Route 601 beside the Konnarock Appalachian Trail Crew headquarters and follows a well-maintained, hard-packed gravel forest road. The drive is straightforward and is suitable for all high-clearance vehicles as well as most smaller AWD vehicles under normal conditions, making it a relaxing route through the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest. During the fall and winter months, the higher elevations provide excellent long-range mountain views as the leaves disappear. Near the end of the road, you'll encounter two Forest Service gates that are currently closed, though they may be opened seasonally depending on management activities and conditions. From the turnaround near the summit, a short 2–3 minute walk leads to a scenic National Forest pond stocked with game fish, making it a worthwhile stop for anglers or anyone looking to enjoy a quiet mountain setting before heading back down the trail.
