Trail Overview

Vepco Road is an ideal route for intermediate offroaders looking for a scenic mountain traverse that combines easy cruising with moderately challenging climbs along a power line corridor. Spanning approximately 12.1 miles through the George Washington National Forest, this trail climbs from a minimum elevation of 1,638 feet up to a peak of 3,337 feet, delivering nearly 3,280 feet of cumulative elevation gain. The lower section of the route features a relatively smooth surface of gravel and natural stone, making it accessible to most high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles. As the trail ascends the ridge of Middle Mountain toward its intersection with Broad Run Road, the path narrows significantly, becoming steeper and far more rugged with loose rock and potential obstacles. This route provides spectacular, wide-open views of the surrounding ridges and valleys, particularly along the cleared power line sections that give the trail its name, derived from the Virginia Electric Power Company. Drivers should be prepared for a technical rating of 3 due to the tight, rocky switchbacks on the upper stretches, where careful tire placement is required to navigate the uneven stone base safely. While the trail is suitable for stock four-wheel-drive vehicles, high-clearance SUVs, and SxSs, cell service is highly spotty throughout the area, making offline maps essential. Several dispersed camping spots are scattered along the corridor, offering excellent opportunities to extend the trip and enjoy the quiet mountain atmosphere.

History

Vepco Road is named after the Virginia Electric Power Company (VEPCO). The route was originally established and is still utilized to access and maintain the high-voltage electrical transmission lines that run along the mountain crest.

We got on Vepco Rd where it connects to Gauley Ridge Rd. Admittedly there were signs off to the side that said Road Closed, but they were not blocking the road, and it was Sunday so we figured no one was doing work today. We went south toward Second Mountain and the road was fully open with no other indications that it was closed. We passed a couple gates that were wide open. We did see some heavy machinery parked so perhaps during the week they are still doing work in the area. If planning a visit during the week it may be good to call ahead to the Forest Service or Dominion to ask about closures.

joined vepco after coming up gauley ridge road and encountered signs saying road closed for what I assume is some kind of work. we took the rest of vepco to where it meets up with fort seybert Rd. since the power line work the road is nicely groomed gravel with lots of switchbacks and steep grade changes. can be done in 2wd but AWD/4wd recommended if wet.

The fire department was dispatched for a crash on vepco rd had to put the f-550 in 4 wheel dr. The entrance at little dry river rd was open however the entrance at long run rd was gated off and not passable. Trail is very rough and washed out. Larger gravel that is deeper than other spots on the trail. Larger gravel spots are found on steep hills makes travel somewhat difficult especially for motorcycles. Reminder to pay attention to mile marker signs in case of an emergency you can let the dispatcher know and give us a better idea of where you are and make our response quicker

Very dry, not terribly dusty. A few dirt bikes, atv and other 4x4 passed. One large tree has toppled between the double wooden bridges. Be cautious when passing under.

The trail is supposedly well maintained, being a wide gravel road. Any vehicle with reasonable ground clearance will be able to get through the trail.

Very easy trail with some great views. Yeah there are power lines but what do you expect on a road for power line maintenance. Nothing too technical, just loose gravel. If you are looking for water and mud, this ain't the trail. If you are looking for an easy drive with nice views I highly recommend.

This is absolutely not a 3; it's very well maintained (perhaps very recently so) gravel road that appears to be access to the power lines. This is a 1- just about any vehicle could do it. Lovely views; minus the power lines. Saw very little in the way of dispersed camping... maybe 2 or 3.

Not sure how this ended up with a 3 rating, this is very much a 1. Pretty much as easy as it gets, Didn't engage 4wd once while on it. If you are new to off roading, have a less than optimal off road vehicle, or just arn't looking for a challenging road to be on to get to some great camp spots, then this is the road for you. Super well maintained, a good abundance of camp spots and no shortage of great views.

This entire trail was mostly very manicured stone roads. Technical rating is a 1 IMO. As long as you have all wheel or four-wheel-drive, you’ll be fine. And only reason you need that is loose gravel. I’m not sure if this got a 3 rating prior to them working on the roads, but I’ve hit 2s that were much more technical. The views were very good though

Very well maintained gravel road, appears to be mainly used to service the high voltage lines that run through this area. Wide enough for two vehicles in most areas.
