Trail Overview

The Chrisman Hollow Trail, also known as FS 274, connects US 211 at the south end and State Road 674 at the north end of the trail. It takes you to several trailheads, including the Lion's Tale Trail, which offers an ADA-accessible, half-mile trail along the Passage Creek. There are several primitive campsites along the road. The trail is a gravel forestry road with some soft sand spots that can turn into mud holes after heavy rain. The road is always wide enough for two vehicles to pass. 4WD and High-Clearance are recommended, especially during Winter. All vehicles must be street legal. Stretching along the border of Virginia and West Virginia, the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest blankets the Blue Ridge mountains, offering 1.8 million acres of lush woodlands, unique mountain balds, peaceful waterways, and adventures galore. With more wildlife and trails than you can explore in a lifetime, every route in the forest carries visitors to new memories. All four seasons are in abundance here, with the explosion of colors in the spring wildflowers challenged only by the flames of colors of the autumn leaves. Summer brings bears, deer, birds, and a multiplicity of pollinators, while winter's stillness is broken only by the crinkle of cracking ice cascades where frozen waterfalls shine in the sun. Come enjoy and explore the natural beauty at the heart of the Appalachian Trail!

Super peaceful trail with beautiful views. Most of the way it is 2 vehicles wide and there is plenty of room. Mostly gravel with some potholes. Didn’t have to go into 4WD for this trail at all.

I tried OnX for the first time since paying for the app. It was close by while on vacation, so just figured I would try it out. It’s a gravel forest service road with dispersed camping and access to trail heads. Nothing significant. Not crowded and the leaves are changing color so it was kind of pretty.

Agree with the description provided: this is a nice easy trail (i.e. gravel road) that follows a state-stocked trout stream (northern section). Nice views into the woods, no long range views, very wide.
