Trail Overview
Wheeler Mountain Road is an ideal route for scenic explorers and moderate offroad drivers looking to experience a classic Vermont Class 4 road slicing through the beautiful Willoughby State Forest. Stretching approximately 3.1 miles through the rugged terrain of northern Vermont, this route provides crucial access to Wheeler Mountain, Wheeler Pond, and several popular rock climbing and hiking trailheads. Drivers should be prepared for a tight, narrow trail with very few pull-offs or places to turn around, meaning situational awareness is key. Because the route traverses sections of private land alongside the public state forest, treading lightly and staying strictly on the designated path is essential to preserving access.
Navigating this trail requires a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle or capable SxSs, especially when tackling its technical obstacles. Rated a 3 out of 10, the route's primary surface consists of dirt, but it features several large mud holes that can expand significantly after rainfall, alongside minor washouts. With elevations ranging from 1,125 feet to 1,742 feet, the track sees mild climbs and descents totaling about 280 feet of elevation gain. The trail connects Route 5 near Willoughby in the south to the northeastern side near Lake Willoughby, making it a perfect addition to a day of exploring the Northeast Kingdom.
