Trail Overview

This trail follows the original route of the Baily-Hazen Military Road, which was built in the 1780s, and in places, you can still see the original cobblestones. There are some truly beautiful views of northern Vermont. The trail is rough and rock-covered and can be very slippery when wet. There are multiple rock ledges up to 3ft high, and there are also lots of loose rocks. The trail narrows in places with not many turnarounds. The trail is cut into the hillside with near-vertical sides in places. I'm driving a 2021 Power wagon and it was a tight fit. Be sure to bring an axe or saw to clear any downed trees.

Difficulty

it's a committing trail in that there are no drive around and only a few turn arounds, the loose stones soccer ball size that cover the trail test your clearance

Got through just fine in a stock gladiator nighthawk. Some wet areas but overall the trail wasn’t too rough.

Light snow during the run. If there’s no snow or ice, this trail is very easy. After passing the logging area, there’s an uphill section where you need to be careful—if there’s ice, extra caution is required. My 4Runner and my friend’s Subaru Forester (with snow tires) both made it through without any issues.

Not a 6. Graveled by logging company. Stock vehicles would find this easy

Didn’t seem as difficult as rated, at least in current condition, maybe from the work they’ve done that others reported. Stock Gladiator Sport ran it fine, but beautiful views for sure

Good to excellent traction, doable in a stock Gladiator without any dragging, with careful tire placement.

Most of the approach roads were the typical 2 lane gravel, but the technical parts of the trail were 1-1 1/2 wide roads with larger rock roadbed. Overall a fun and beautiful trail, plenty of places to stop for gas or food along the way.

Tried this trail last year but had to turn around due to large boulders blocking the way. This year someone has gone up with a bulldozer and many loads of stone making the trail easily passable. Was mostly single width trail but there are a few places/ fields to turn around or pull off and enjoy the scenery.

we did not know it was closed until speaking with a local after, the town hadn't put signs up for the trail closure during mud season yet. it was very difficult in the snow, as deep as 1 foot in spots. there were 3 sections where there was some hard climbs over big rock, so if you got a stock rig like us be aware. probably way easier in the dry season. 4lo the whole way. took us about 3 hours in the snow. I'd recommend Wheeler mountain as an appetizer, and this as your main course for the day.
