Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This route offers a great mix of terrain, scenery, and technical driving as it winds through open desert country and slickrock benches. The trail begins with easier dirt sections bordered by scattered brush and juniper before quickly transitioning into rougher terrain. Expect loose rock, embedded stone, shallow ledges, and uneven climbs that can make the ride bouncy and require careful tire placement. Several slickrock sections provide solid traction but feature off-camber lines and stepped shelves that may challenge lower-clearance vehicles. As the route continues, it opens to sweeping views of layered canyon walls, mesas, and wide desert valleys. Drivers should be prepared for changing surfaces, moderate articulation, and slower travel speeds through the rockier sections.

Difficulty

This route starts out fairly easy on dirt and hardpack but becomes more technical with slickrock sections, uneven climbs, and scattered minor rocks that mostly add to a rougher, bumpier ride rather than creating major obstacles. Most challenges are manageable for high-clearance 4WD vehicles with good tires, and careful line choice is only needed in a few spots. Tight sections between junipers may cause pinstriping for wider vehicles, so full-size trucks and wider rigs should use caution. Stock 4x4s with decent clearance should do fine in dry conditions; wet weather could increase difficulty slightly.

History

This route branches from the famous Top of the World trail, one of the most recognized off-road routes near Moab. The surrounding region has a long history tied to ranching, mining, and backcountry travel routes that connected remote parts of eastern Utah.
