Trail Overview

This trail has larger rocks and ledges at the start. Higher clearance is needed. The rocks give way to seasonal streams and meadows. There are switchbacks and shelf roads that ultimately end at an overlook of Silver Lake Flats. This is a single-width trail with limited turnaround options. The reward is wildlife, Limited traffic, and great mountain views.

Difficulty

Multiple points of loose rock present a hazard. During this mapping, the trail followed up the Forrest Service track, but after a pause at the top for rain, the way down encountered a slide that covered that track. This trail can be difficult at times, plan for challenges.

History

This is a commissary run left over from mining operations in the canyon that went on through the 1940's. Only the part tracked is still accessible, the more straight run that shows generally east to west across the lower section has been blocked for access.

Definitely not a 4/10, closer to a 6. The rocks are pretty big, and plan on getting a few new pinstripes. Also don’t plan to turn around until you’re almost at the top

This is a very challenging 5 or well deserved 6. The first 200ish yards is a loos rock garden, crank it into 4LO and send it slowly. The next 200 yards or so are technical, spotter is needed and you will still probably scrape. You will absolutely get new pin stripes. After that it is easier finally deserves its 3-4 rating. You will pass a sort of rockslide after the switchbacks, there’s a decent turn around right there, we maneuvered 3 vehicles there. There is 1 small campsite further along that has enough room for 1 maybe 2 vehicles to turn around, DO NOT go further unless you plan on backing up the 100 yards to the turn around or you have a small ATV or dirt bike. The view is well worth the 100 yard walk from the campsite. There’s a small cave at the end with unknown contents, use caution, potential wildlife living inside. The way down is just as if not harder than the way up. Plan for extra time go slowly. Jeep Wrangler on 31s, and 2 Tacomas on 32s, only one had a lift and didn’t scrape

There are some decent sized boulders at the beginning before the first switchback. Harder than a 4 if you are in a 4wd, if you are in a SS its probably pretty casual.

Definitely not a 4, but if you have larger tires, the rocks at the beginning won't be too bad. You need clearance, and lockers will help a lot. Once you're through that section, it's easier. Don't go all the way to the end. Trying to turn around there is a bad idea in anything bigger than a quad or a dirtbike. Either back up or park at the campsite 100 yards or so from the end of the trail. The trail didn't seem overly tight to me, but there definitely aren't many places to pass. I might hesitate to bring a long wheelbase full size pickup, though. Short, but very pretty!

This is not a full width road, jeeps & SXS's only unless you like pinstripes. 35's and lockers on the raptor made it easy but the width was not full size friendly. Beginning quarter of the trail was as described, some good sized 2-3' boulders/shelves. This should be a light 6, maybe hard 5, due to the beginning but definitely not a 4.

8-16” rock section, would recommend 35” tires and a locker.

It’s not to bad in my x3 on 35” tires. The worst part was the abrupt trail end and the slide off at the end. Would recommend to stop about 100-200 yards before the end of the trail. There is a larger area to turn around.

Trail is definitely harder then a 4 probably a very hard 5 with large rocks and lots of getting out of the vehicle and spotting required. The trail itself was quite but every where else in the area was crowded especially at the nearby lakes. Overall fun trail we turned around at about half way as we were not prepared for that challenging of a trail but definitely worth doing would recommend 2 inch lift and 33s for tiers if possible.

Rough and rocky. Was made aware afterwards that the trail is prone to slides and has a wash at the top that is impassable. Would not recommend going alone.
