Trail Overview

This is a narrow track through pleasant trees. The track switches up the mountainside and provides good views of the surrounding peaks. Since it ends at a locked gate, it needs an hour up, and an hour down. Passing can be difficult due to the track width. There are some pleasant meadows at the turnout near the top.

Difficulty

There are a few rocks that approach a 12" step. The track is narrow. Pass with care. Minor ruts and bumps are expected. It is much more challenging if it is wet or snowy. The trail is open from 1 April to 30 November.

I noticed this trail was rated a 2/10, but I have to agree with another reviewer who said that seems too low. Personally, I’d put it closer to a 4/10. There were several deep ruts along the way, plus some narrow, rocky, off-camber switchbacks that definitely added to the challenge. This is my first week using OnX Off-Road, so I’m still getting familiar with their rating system, but based on my experience, this trail felt more demanding than the posted rating suggests.

Not necessarily a difficult drive however it’s very narrow and has limited pull off spots so if it’s a busy day then this quick trip will turn long with having to pull off and even back up at times

The trail is very narrow with very few places to pass another vehicle. If you do see come across someone, one of you is going to have to do a long, sketchy, backup procedure. I also agree with the others, this trail is not a 2. I would put it closer to a 4.

The rating is wrong. I’m an onX trail guide, and if I had guided this trail, I would have rated it a 5 maybe according to our rubric. Definitely NOT a 2. Unfortunately because this trail has already been guided, and this trail report is more of an afterthought, I didn’t get many pictures. Just a frame grab of a video my wife shot. But this trail is a fun trail. You just need to be prepared. Ran in my 2020 4Runner. The trail is quite narrow, a lot of sections of steep shelf road with some pretty tight switchbacks. Lots of erosion. Watch for sections on the shelf road with abrupt dips to the downhill side with large rocks on the uphill side. These will make you lean hard. Lots of off camber sections and big rocks. There are also some pretty steep sections.

This was my first real trail I did in American fork canyon and it was a lot of fun. I was in my 1992 Jeep Yj inline 4. Has a 2.75” lift with 31” tires. There’s definitely rocky sections where it was bumpy. The switch backs are questionable but in my little jeep it did them great. There was one switchback that was really close to the edge where I had to do a two point turn. If you don’t have a little lift you may have some trouble on some sections. Sometimes the rocks would go up a bit and then the other side would be flat tipping you over. Super fun trail

Super fun in a small vehicle, but I’d avoid this one in a full size. Probably wouldn’t be super enjoyable even in a midsize. I agree that 2 seems like a sand bag. 3/4 seems more appropriate. Pass with care.

I was not expecting this ride to be as difficult / narrow as it was. Felt more like a 3/4, and it was exceptionally narrow. Past a mile in I would have a really hard time believing it is passable in a full size 4x4. My wife and I are both pretty experienced off-roaders and it was an easy decision to turn around in our stock F150 as soon as we had the space to. Fun road but really would recommend for SxS, dirt bikes, and ATVs. A high clearance 4x4 could do it, though the route would be extremely tight.

Such a fun trail that winds up the hillside through some little shelf road sections and some trees. Some tippy spots that have a bit of a pucker factor to them, but not too bad if taken slowly. Very dusty and dry.

One of my new favorite trails definitely harder than the rating probably more like a 4. The first major obstacle is very fun with multiple lines possible but smart to have a spotter I scraped my wheels rim even when being very cautious. Trail is very dusty with lots of tight turns some have som significant rock ledges. There are also lots of shelf roads with lots of rock fins and ledges causing you to lean towards the drop off but very fun and doable. There is a closed gate at the top and not tons of turn around room especially with a large group.

Beautiful trail, but that 2 rating is off I took my bike up and is wasn't an easy trail. I know a 4x4 could do it but it has to be decked out

This trail is not what I’d call “easy”, I would not recommend driving this trail with anything bigger or wider than a Tacoma.
