Trail Overview
The BLM 73M - Lower Loop is a mesmerizing and highly engaging 3.2-mile single-lane two-track adventure that meanders gracefully along a lower dirt bench perched high above the majestic canyon floor. Functioning as a scenic continuation of the main BLM 73M route, this rugged trail beautifully wraps back on itself, offering explorers a fresh, immersive perspective of the vibrant high-desert landscape. As you slowly navigate the winding path, the track twists intimately between fragrant, ancient juniper trees, demanding a deliberate and unhurried pace. One of the absolute most critical aspects of this specific environment is the widespread presence of fragile, dark cryptobiotic soil crusts flanking the road. Visitors must be exceptionally vigilant and stay strictly on the designated dirt track to protect this vital, living desert ecosystem—always remember the local golden rule: "tiptoe through the crypto." The immersive journey provides fantastic canyon overlooks and a profound sense of secluded backcountry isolation, but the constant maneuvering through heavily eroded dry washes and undulating dirt means you will be crawling rather than cruising. Along the way, keep an eye out for unique trailside features like a makeshift stick shelter built carefully into the juniper groves.
Difficulty
The BLM 73M Lower Loop securely earns a Level 3 Moderate technical rating primarily due to its persistent, deep erosion ruts and at least one notably steep, challenging dirt climb. While it is not considered an extreme rock-crawling trail, the continuous need to crawl slowly through deeply eroded dry washes and safely negotiate uneven, twisting off-camber sections demands a highly capable vehicle. High ground clearance and a true four-wheel-drive system are highly recommended to maintain traction and avoid destructive undercarriage scrapes. While a skilled driver might push limits, a standard, low-clearance AWD crossover would undoubtedly face significant, stressful challenges and likely suffer damage navigating these sudden dips and sharp climbs.
