Trail Overview
BLM 73P is a brief but highly rewarding 0.4-mile offshoot trail that leads backcountry explorers directly to the edge of a magnificent, sweeping canyon. This exceptionally twisty, red-sand double-track meanders intimately through dense, mature groves of fragrant juniper trees. The vibrant, soft sandy tread offers a beautiful visual contrast against the surrounding rugged green vegetation and the bright, sunlit blue sky above. As you slowly navigate the winding path, the tight corridor requires deliberate maneuvering, and the stubbornly encroaching juniper branches mean that aggressive paint pinstriping is a guarantee for any full-size rig or wide SUV. However, the scratchy, slow-moving journey is well worth the effort; the trail abruptly terminates at a spectacularly scenic, secluded rim overlook. From this premier vantage point, visitors are treated to breathtaking, unobstructed panoramic views plunging deeply into the dramatic canyon below, making it a perfect spot for photography or a quiet backcountry break.
Difficulty
BLM 73P securely earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating primarily due to its exceptionally narrow, winding nature and soft, sandy surface. The trail does not feature any severe off-camber washouts, deep mud bogs, or technical rock-crawling ledges. However, the path twists sharply and continuously between rigid juniper trunks, requiring a slow, deliberate crawling pace to maneuver safely. Because the stiff brush aggressively encroaches directly onto the double-track, full-size trucks and wide SUVs will inevitably endure guaranteed pinstriping along their side panels. A standard AWD crossover or high-clearance 2WD vehicle can easily manage the soft sand under standard dry conditions, provided the driver is completely comfortable with branches brushing heavily against their vehicle's clear coat.
