Trail Overview
Functioning as a vital 3.2-mile backcountry connector, BLM 73Q is a rugged and incredibly scenic dirt and rock two-track adventure. The trail beautifully meanders along an elevated dirt bench perched high above the surrounding canyon, offering a remarkable sense of remote isolation and sweeping views. As explorers navigate the winding, vivid red-dirt pathway, they will pass through varying environments, from open sagebrush clearings to dense, overgrown groves of vibrant juniper and pine trees. Because sections of this trail are distinctly tight and unmaintained, the rigid encroaching brush guarantees aggressive pinstriping for any full-size rig or wide SUV attempting the drive. However, the scratchy journey yields excellent rewards; the elevated bench harbors numerous fantastic, flat dispersed camping options situated directly off the trail, perfect for an unforgettable, secluded overnight stay in the high desert.
Difficulty
BLM 73Q earns a solid Level 3 Moderate technical rating. While it operates primarily as a transit connector, the path is heavily punctuated by severe, deep erosion ruts and a couple of notably steep, rocky, off-camber climbs that will aggressively test a vehicle's articulation and traction. Low-clearance passenger cars and standard AWD crossovers will quickly bottom out and struggle on these sharp, uneven transitions. A true 4x4 vehicle with high ground clearance is strongly recommended to safely negotiate the dips and climbs without risking undercarriage damage or sliding off the leaning track.
