Trail Overview

East Portal is a side road off Murdock Basin Road that heads down to a small seasonal reservoir and a waterfall. The road is rough and rocky, and for most of the road, lower clearance vehicles must use caution. Towards the bottom of the descent, the road switchbacks five times before straightening out again; these switchbacks are wide and have plenty of room for larger vehicles, though a couple of them are rocky--plenty of dispersed camping at the bottom and a couple of sites along the road leading down. There is a possibility of some fallen trees as there was a lot of deadfall in the area when I was there, so be prepared. This trail is open year-round but may be inaccessible in the winter and spring due to snow.

Rocky but nothing too bad for a stock truck with decent clearance. Did this fine in my stock Ford Ranger Raptor.

Very rough and rocky but any 4wd truck or SUV should be ok. Just have to take it slow and be rewarded with possible water front camping and nice waterfall at the end.

Took time to pass in a lifted tundra - narrow in places, and had to fight off lots of side by sides… entirety of the trail is loose rock barring in size from gravel to 4+ feet diameter

Consistently bumpy and rocky, some off camber ruts, would not recommend in anything other than high clearance 4x4. Definitely more of a 5-6 rating
