Trail Overview
BLM 60J is a highly scenic, 0.9-mile backcountry two-track that treats off-road explorers to a quintessential high-desert adventure. The journey begins on a vividly colored, soft red-sand path that meanders gracefully through a classic landscape of fragrant green juniper trees and dense, rustic desert scrub. Along the initial stretches of this wonderfully quiet route, visitors will find a couple of excellent, flat dispersed campsites situated perfectly for a secluded, peaceful overnight stay under the expansive, cloudy skies. At approximately the midway point of the drive, travelers will encounter a prominent red metal ranch gate spanning the trail, displaying a bright yellow "PLEASE CLOSE GATE" sign. This boundary gate is unlocked, allowing legal access, but it is absolutely critical for all visitors to practice proper backcountry etiquette by securely closing and latching it immediately after passing through. Beyond the gate, the sandy trail opens up and continues until it gracefully terminates at a spectacular sandstone bluff. From this elevated vantage point, drivers are beautifully rewarded with numerous breathtaking, panoramic viewpoints looking out over the sprawling valleys and rugged canyon landscape below.
Difficulty
BLM 60J confidently earns a Level 2 Easy technical rating entirely due to its persistently soft, deep red-sand surface. The route is fundamentally smooth and completely devoid of any severe, vehicle-damaging rock-crawling ledges, steep off-camber washouts, or deep mud bogs. However, the distinctly loose, shifting nature of the sand requires a driver to maintain steady momentum to avoid getting bogged down. A standard AWD crossover, stock SUV, or high-clearance 2WD truck can easily manage this short route safely under standard dry conditions. Lowering your tire pressures before hitting the sand is highly recommended to vastly improve flotation, maintain traction, and increase overall ride comfort.
