Trail Overview

Backwards Bill is an exceptional route for intermediate to advanced offroaders seeking a challenging mix of slickrock obstacles and deep sandy stretches near Moab, Utah. This scenic 16.9-mile trail connects portions of Wipe-Out Hill and Seven Mile Rim, delivering breathtaking views of Sevenmile Canyon and the distant red rock formations of Arches National Park. Drivers will experience significant elevation changes ranging from 4,590 to 5,354 feet, climbing a cumulative 1,268 feet along the route. The trail's primary obstacle is the famous Wipe-Out Hill climb. With a moderate technical rating of 5, the route presents multiple off-camber sections, ledges, and steep descents that will test both driver skill and vehicle capability. Due to extreme summer heat and occasional winter snows, the best times to tackle this trail are during the spring and fall when temperatures are mild. Keep an eye out for iconic landmarks such as Courthouse Rock and Slickensides Arch, which flank the trail and offer incredible photo opportunities along this classic Moab backcountry adventure.

I needed a better equipped vehicle. It was doable in my stock Tacoma but in one spot I had to use the rear locker to get up a shelf. My added on skid plates saved the day.

Lots of ledges, loose rock, few small water crossings, sand was wet and deep in spots bc we got stuck in a thunderstorm.

Fun and beautiful, at least a stock 4x4 is needed, although there a few drop offs that may be difficult and rub your trailer hitch. The views are spectacular.
