Trail Overview

This 106-mile scenic drive through the headwaters of the Navasota River will take you past multiple historic cemeteries, and offers different levels of camp amenities at Navarro Mills Lake. The Texas wildflower bloom in the spring offers incredible photo opportunities as the bluebonnets, phlox drummondii and indian paintbrush take over the fields. The route is primarily made up of gravel roads with a mix of dirt field roads. Use caution during wet weather, as most will become impassable.

Mostly gravel roads with some dirt/muddy parts mixed in. Some great stretches for some high speed runs.

Pretty dry and flat. 80% gravel roads with some dirt roads sprinkled in. Could probably be done in 2wd

Fun trail took about 4.5 hours there is a bridge out half way through. U can take the main road around and get back to the trail a few miles down. Would be challenging if muddy

There is a bridge on CO RD 214 that is under construction. I had to find another way around but nothing bad.

This trail is for the most part small unimproved county roads. There’s really not much to see other than average Texas scenery. If you’re not from Texas it might be more interesting, but really wasn’t much of a trail in my opinion. I made the entire thing in 2wd without any wheel spin or finesse.

Last 1/4 of the trail has quite a few challenges like the water on the trail. I bypassed that obstruction and came across a few challenging rutted out muddy roads. Would not do this trail in anything with non-aggressive large diameter tires or alone until it dries out more. Very fun and rewarding if you can make it without getting stuck

Trail was in good shape except deep water over trail and very deep mud by resevoir 26, about 3/4 of the way from Hillsboro to Navarro Mills Lake.

Today we took the Hillsboro entrance it didn’t get muddy until that sharp right turn at the construction site. About 20 of us hit it and I made it in 2wd but literally had it pedal to the metal trying to get up the last hill. Switched to 4wd at the mud bridge and that was pretty sketchy even in the jeep. Super rutted out on left side and a straight drop off on the right side left no room for error. At the end of the day we all made it through some of the raptors got caught in the rut and STRUGGLED to get out. We made it to the bridge that was closed went around got back on the trail and took it to the Texas traverse trail. Super muddy in spots there as well. Made it to another bridge that said “closed” but we crossed no problem

Hands down my favorite route so far in the Long travel, way more mud and dirt than the Chisholm trail byway although Chisholm has a really fun jump on that route. If you have a raptor or a long travel Toyota this route rips. Lot of good areas you can carry speed and not have to slow down for houses or sharp turns etc… however when you do pass the houses slow to a crawl as they all have wild dogs that literally run right out in front of you. There’s one super sketchy bridge on the mud road that looked pretty janky but we hit it going like 40 (keep in mind my long travel is 2wd) we don’t slow down through the mud lol but yeah it was dry enough to get through no problem but we enough to have some fun. We didn’t make it past the closed bridge we broke several parts and decided to call it at the bridge. Avg speed was 45-60 mph, a couple of blind corners to watch out for other than that it’s wide open (if coming from Cleburne to Hillsboro there’s a fun train tracks jump going to route)

Really fun trail. Lots of the trail were county roads that went through fields. A couple parts were impassable to deep ruts so I just back tracked and picked up down the line. Lots of windmills and some cool fields to take a break and stretch. Not sure if I would take this route if it had just rained. Seems like it could get muddy quick. I finished this train around Hillsboro then headed north east to finish the Texas traverse leg 2 trail which I also recommend.
