Trail Overview

As you depart the National Forest systems of Texas, you start coming into Texas farmland. You will cross the Trinity River a couple of times while paralleling it for miles. Coal mining is still prevalent in this region as a fuel for power plants. You will find a variety of camping from State Park full hook-ups, to primitive camp spots on lakes. This section is 60% non paved and 100% scenic. Rain or wet roads can stop you in your tracks across the northern part.

Trail is primarily gravel roads. Used 4x4 twice - but probably would have been fine without it. Drive had some nice views but was pretty boring. Got tired of the gravel roads and made some of my own bypasses to the trail.

Very dusty. If you run this topless/doorless you will get completely covered in dust. There is one section that requires a detour around a damaged bridge. The bridge is under repair at this time.

Great morning ride, mostly gravel roads with small sections of dirt and mud. Most can be completed in 2H. There was one mud section that would be hard in a 2WD vehicle.

Looks like someone took the corner too wide with a trailer and sent it right off the side of the bridge. The road is “closed” but we made it through after careful assessment of the damages. Also it went from a dry dessert like environment to a mud swamp in literally 5 mins due to a random shower as we were driving. I ended up sliding off the road and getting stuck instantly as I’m in a 2wd prerunner. So if you’re reading this today, you may give it a day or two to dry back out. Also just fyi that mud turns to literal concrete when it tries so cleaning my rig took hours and is still not 100 percent clean 🤦🏻‍♂️. Luckily I did manage to power out of it once I got out of the rut I was in and made it up onto the grass.

Great fun , my 18 year old and 20 year sons enjoyed it . Mostly easy dirt roads with a couple of sketchy spots for a stock Subie Outback with all seasons on it , ran across a couple of fun muddy patch’s on hard pack dirt , only skipped on short section of deeply rutted road . Highly recommended !

Dry and dusty most of the way. A few areas Id like to back and explore. Houses in several areas so be mindful of potential traffic on blind. narrow corners. Mostly dirt and sand roads easy to do especially with no rain.

This gravel track is a combination of county roads, interspersed with some paved and muddy sections. During dry weather, it can be easily navigated by an all-wheel drive vehicle with at least six inches of ground clearance. Most of the track was dry and easily passable.

Mostly easy wide garvel rd. recent rains 7/13/25 made it very muddy in certain areas not passable with 2wd no traffic but some houses and ranches

Gravel roads where clean. Those were easy. But there are some really muddy roads when you hit the corn field areas. No way through them unless you put it in 4 wheel drive if it’s muddy. There is a creek called Hackberry. Above Hillsboro. You have to cross and it can be pretty intense if there was a lot of rain recently. Overall a laid back trail and nice ride through Texas country. Even easier if there hasn’t been any rain.

Started in Sam Houston National forest and went to Hwy 7 near crocket. only came across 1 area of road damage that was not passable but was a short double back and detour so no issues. Beautiful back roads.

Pretty nice trail for adventure bikes. I would say it's likely a bit too boring for 4 wheeled vehicles. No rain in sight, so the trail was dry and dusty. A few potholes had to be dealt with, and a couple of roads had ruts. Some turns were squirrely with loose dust. We initially started on the Navasota Headwaters trail, but this one looked better, so we switched at Hwy 31 and headed toward Hubbard. Finished at Buc-ees in Hillsboro.

I started from Fairfield and went to SH-7. Scenic route with a LOT of dust. Typical county dirt roads that are well cared for.
