Trail Overview
Merus 101 is a scenic 4.5-mile four-wheel-drive trail running the length of Merus Adventure Park, making it an essential route for offroaders seeking to experience the dramatic depth and geological wonders of Palo Duro Canyon. The journey begins with a heart-pumping descent known as the "Drop-In," a steep 21-degree path composed of loose rock, sand, and gravel that drops off the canyon rim. From there, the trail winds across the canyon floor, descending from an elevation of 3,376 feet down to 2,642 feet, losing over 870 feet of elevation. The route is highly suited for stock high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and OHVs looking to test their suspension on short, rocky ledges and tight climbs.
Navigating the canyon floor requires crossing the Salt Fork Creek multiple times, where offroaders will encounter mud and slick terrain, particularly after recent rainfall. With a technical rating of 3, the trail offers a manageable challenge with enough loose surfaces and short, steep ascents to keep drivers engaged. The surrounding landscape showcases millions of years of geological erosion, exposing vibrant red-rock walls and unique formations that define this Texas panhandle gem. Because the trail resides within a private adventure park, access requires park admission and compliance with local safety regulations.

Merus 101 is famous for the "Drop-In." A steep (21-degree), rock/sand/gravel path that is the gateway to the canyon floor. The Drop-In will get your heart pumping for both the steep grade and the breathtaking views on the way down. The rest of the trail is full of short, steep climbs and tight, rocky steeps that will give your suspension a workout.
Access Description
Located within Merus Adventure Park, a private off-road park in Palo Duro Canyon. Access requires a paid permit, park entry fee, and booking in advance. Standard safety gear, passenger limits, and vehicle requirements set by the park apply.
