Trail Overview
Marathon Road is a long desert backcountry route that cuts through the rugged landscape of Terlingua Ranch. The road stretches from Highway 118 near Study Butte and provides a remote approach to the entrance of Big Bend National Park. The surface consists primarily of dirt and gravel with sections of loose rock, washboarding, and natural erosion. Drivers can expect rolling desert terrain, wide open views, and classic Chihuahuan Desert scenery throughout the route. This road travels through Terlingua Ranch, meaning all surrounding land is private property. Remain on established roads at all times and do not venture onto side tracks or unmarked routes. Conditions can vary depending on recent weather, with occasional washouts or rougher sections forming after storms.
Difficulty
Marathon Road is generally manageable for most high-clearance vehicles in dry conditions. Expect washboarding, loose rock, and uneven desert terrain. 4WD is not always required, but is beneficial in rougher stretches or after rainfall.
