Trail Overview
CAT Mountain is one of the more challenging trails located within Concan Adventure Trails and climbs steeply toward the top of CAT Mountain along the property fence line. The trail gains elevation quickly and is visible from the main highway as you enter the park, making it one of the more recognizable routes on the property. As the climb progresses, the trail becomes narrow and heavily rock-covered, with very limited room to maneuver or pass other vehicles. The route eventually reaches a large open area near the top of the mountain where drivers can stop, camp, or safely turn around before descending back down the same way. Beyond this point, the trail becomes extremely difficult and is primarily suited for dedicated off-road buggies. Most full-size vehicles and standard 4x4s should plan to turn around at the summit area.
Difficulty
On this trail, you’ll encounter a steep rocky climb with loose gravel, uneven rock surfaces, and continuous elevation gain throughout the route. While there are very few off-camber sections, the narrow trail width and lack of turnaround points make the climb more technical and committing than many nearby trails. The rocky terrain can create traction challenges, especially for vehicles without aggressive tires or adequate ground clearance. A high-clearance 4x4 with proper off-road tires is strongly recommended due to the steep incline and rough terrain. Descending the mountain requires careful braking and tire placement, particularly in loose conditions. Overall, CAT Mountain is considered one of the more difficult trails in the park and is best suited for experienced drivers and properly equipped vehicles.
