Trail Overview

This regionally famous name is shared with a few other areas, but this might be the actual Rocky Top. It's definitely rocky and a bit inhospitable, as the song describes. While most of the road is rather tame, there are a few sections with rock ledges, and the lower elevation has some washes that are challenging to cross. A stock 4WD truck can traverse the route with some patience and a willingness to stack some rocks to clear obstacles. Cell service is available at the higher elevations but nonexistent as you enter the valley.

Difficulty

While the majority isn't difficult to drive, the ledges and washouts require patience, a good spotter, and communication.

Getting onto Rocky Top, the ruts were fairly deep. Once up the trail a bit, just pretty dry and loose rock and some slightly technical sections. I continued onto the side trail (Big Fill) to cut over to Hall Top. That trail was actually a touch more interesting due to the deeper mud holes. There was an optional steep rutted hill climb at a camp site on Rocky Top that I made it up no problem, but could be difficult for some. There was a 7 ft drop into a mud hole on Big Fill that had claimed some bumpers from other vehicles that were in a pile off to the side. I huh hit mine but it’s steel and was fine. Overall fun trail but don’t go into that big mud pit unless you have at least a slight lift.

After a fresh rain there were lots of mud sections and deeper than usual mud holes. The rutted sections were pretty deep and slippery. The trail also had tons of loose rocks on it. I would definitely not try this trail without a lifted 4x4 with good tires. Great trail.

We drove this trail today and it’s definitely more rutted out and torn up than June of 2024 when we drove it last. 2” lift on 35” tires had no problems, but there were a few spots that had some high roll. Overall, still a very fun trail with some great views at the top.

Started the trail from the Log Church Road. Traul begins smooth as you travel up, then has some decent 8"-12" ruts and a lot of rocks as you approach the top. some vehicles with smaller clearance may scrape in a few spots. On the otherside as we were exiting we did run into a contractor who stated they are surveying the road and are going to be repairing/improving the state of the road, so it may not be useable in the near future.

Moderate climbs with some loose rock but had a good experience. Yes I'm in a Crosstrek. No I don't know anything about the Silver Impala lol

overall it was a fun experience! The road up to the overlook or the burn pit is, is unobstructionated and easy to get to. apart from the rocks coming up the front side of the trail, two-wheel drive could probably be used to make it this far on a dry day. The back side of the trail coming off of the fire pit on the other hand is a little bit more treacherous. My Jeep is relatively stock, it has a 1-in leveling lift and 275/70 tires that are all terrain and I was able to go just about everywhere unobstructed. that being said the mud hole about a mile away from the overlook would absolutely get you stuck if you don't have high ground clearance and good tires. I would not attempt it without friends or a winch. The drop off is nearly 7 ft in total stair stepping all the way down. The water looks deep but it's a little more than a foot deep to 2 ft deep at the most. that being said, so long as you navigate the subsequent water holes after it with some caution, you should be able to make it all the way through.

Deep ruts at the beginning of the trail and rocky towards The top. Take your time. Was able to get up to the top and down the other side of the mountain with a stock ‘23 Tacoma OR with minimal rubbing.

Entrance is very washed out but still passable in a stock 4x4. Once at the end of the trail do not continue up the long service road (unrated white road) on the right, this takes you across the mountain for several miles and leads to a very large mud hole that is impassible without a very high clearance vehicle. Myself and another vehicle had to back up for half a mile before we were able to turn around.
