Trail Overview

The Catoosa WMA Noah Hambey loop is a scenic, 17.7-mile gravel route winding through the southwestern reaches of the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area in Tennessee, ideal for beginners, families, or anyone seeking a relaxing, low-stress day in the woods. Rated as a mild 2 out of 10, this route is easily manageable for stock four-wheel-drive vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs, boasting well-maintained gravel forest service roads that climb from 1,097 feet to a peak elevation of 2,174 feet. As you embark on the trail, you will cross an entrance featuring a wooden bridge with a strict three-ton weight limit, immediately immersing you in dense hardwood forests. The loop winds past rolling terrain near Pilot Knob and Hatfield Mountain, providing a peaceful escape with several spur trails and intersecting forest roads branching off to invite further exploration of the management area. While the driving is straightforward, visitors should plan carefully around the area's specific regulations and limited amenities. The Catoosa Wildlife Management Area is strictly closed to travel from sundown to sunup, meaning night riding is prohibited. Standard dispersed wild camping is not permitted along the route, but a dedicated campground with several unimproved sites is available for those looking to stay overnight in a rustic setting. Cellular service is highly unreliable or entirely absent throughout most of the loop, so downloading offline maps beforehand is essential. Be sure to keep an eye out for a short side spur leading to an abandoned forest lookout tower, which offers a great spot to stretch your legs and take in the surrounding landscape.

Main trail is easy. All gravel. Some of the offshoots are more challenging. Rutted in places.
