Trail Overview

Spearfish Mountain is one of the three peaks that make up the mountains surrounding Spearfish. It is the only one accessible by off road vehicles. A short drive down Christensen Drive will lead you to the trail head. From here there is one main shot up to the top with a few different spurs off the main trail, but all meet back up at some point. From the top on a clear day you can see Bear Butte, Crow Peak, and Spearfish Canyon. This is a great short ride at sunset to have scenic views of the canyon.

The trail is pretty easy as was submitted before! After getting up there the problem we found was first a sign saying a closed gate then a couple of tree down across the road! There was a gate and trail Cameras

Great views. As others have mentioned there are several areas of fairly deep washouts. I was able to straddle or go around all the very deep ones. Aside from that, there are some fairly sharp rocks in places to keep an eye on. There is one larger mudpit that I avoided (existing path around it) as I had no idea how deep it was. We turned around by the electric lines as it looked like rain was moving in and it was getting dark.

Gets really deeply washed out about 1.5mi. Driving a Tacoma. Probably could have been fine but this is my daily driver, so I turned around.

Fair amount of runoff ruts over a foot deep in some places. Some water and mud, nothing crazy. Airing down would certainly make it smoother ride.

FYI south side of trail is gated off. Very nice trail! Is getting washed out but our Stock Sasquatch Bronco handled it just fine. We had a little run in with a short heavy rain storm that made for good memories! I think we had about 1.5-2hrs on the trail because of the south gate being closed. Did see a couple deer along the way. The Spearfish Hiking trail was also a nice break.

Trail to the top is open and mostly dry some deep water and mud crossings, lots of wildlife, the side spurs most were open very rough and some spurs were blocked by tree fall so depending on the side spurs you choose. Over all I love this ride easy and lots of wildlife absolutely gorgeous this time of year.
