Trail Overview

This is Root Run - FS 142 surface is gravelly and starts going slightly uphill. Along the trailside is some golden road on the side of the road makes for nice drive. Right off the bat, you cross a power line for some nice scenic views. There are some minor ruts from water runoff. There are active gas wells and storage tanks along this trail, so you are going to be smelling natural gas as you drive along. 0.6 miles in, and there are some nice-sized potholes. Take it easy on the right inside the road for dips down, or it's kind of caved over. About a mile in, there’s a sharp curve to the left. And then, 1.3 miles, a hairpin curve to the right; take it slow. As you go around the corner, there are some decent-sized rocks from rainwater runoff. 1 1/2 miles, and you can come to an intersection; you want to head right. 2 miles, and you head back up the side of the mountain; off to the right, you can see some nice views through the trees. The surface of the road has some larger rocks, so you would keep an eye on that. 2.4 miles, and we are taking the road to the right. When you head to the right, the trail starts to narrow, and it is really tight. Goldenrod is overgrown. 2.8 miles in, the trail overgrowth is pretty overgrown and tight. There's also a fairly large mud hole right there on the curve. 3.1 miles and nearing the end of the trail, in a couple of American Oil storage tanks, and we're heading to the left a little of them. 3.3 miles, and we're at the end of the trail, with a nonfunctioning pump jack and a very small place, a turnaround. Open year-round to highway-legal vehicles only. Accessibility: Like many forest roads, its condition can vary, and it is best to check the Allegheny National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for the latest information on its status. Conditions are also subject to weather and seasonal changes. https://www.fs.usda.gov/r09/allegheny
