Trail Overview
Root Run A - FS 142A is a spur off of Forest Service Road 142. It starts slightly uphill and is pretty gravelly. There are some minor ruts due to rainfall runoff. There is scenic views off to the left of the adjacent hills and valley. 1/2 mile in, the surface is pretty flat and easygoing to travel as you drive through a grove of hemlock trees, and it makes for a nice drive. 1 mile, and this is a small tree that's been down across the road, and some of it sticks out into the trail. Pay attention; you could scrape the side of your rig. 1.2 miles, and we're heading to a river, right. This gets a little narrower and overgrown, but not too bad. 1.3 miles and there's a medium-size water hole on the road. 1 1/2 miles and we have more water on the trail. The trail at this point is still pretty overgrown, but it's still defined, and you can still traverse it. 2.3 miles and a rotted-down tree, we took about 10 minutes to clear it off the path. But the last 1/2 of this trail is really overgrown. There's a downed tree further down, so we are going to end it here. Open yearlong to highway legal vehicle only. Accessibility: Like many forest roads, its condition can vary, and it is best to check the Allegheny National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for the latest information on its status. Conditions are also subject to weather and seasonal changes. https://www.fs.usda.gov/r09/allegheny
