Trail Overview

Boulder Field Run provides a loop run located off 534 in Hickory Run State Park and ends near the state park picnic area. This route is one way but watch for State Park vehicles in addition to animals on the trail. There is a wooden bridge crossing and tunnel (underneath the PA Turnpike), the rest is surrounded by trees and dense forest. At about the halfway point is the famous "Boulder Field". There is plenty of parking, and restrooms, and it makes for a great picnic spot.

Difficulty

This trail consists of dirt and rocky roads with gentle grades. There are some small potholes due to weather and erosion. The trail is safe for 4WD and 2WD.

History

The Boulder Field was created from a melting glacier, bringing rocks and debris into the area.

All one way, when you are 3/4th of the way going under the 475 bridge very bumpy/ rutted up but able to still get around on the sides.

Condition were fine. Light snow and rain but nothing of note. This is a very basic trail. If you go during or just after a rain storm, would be more muddy and water crossings may be flowing more but relatively tame today.

Beautiful day, a couple other people visiting, was able to do the trail in 2WD. Boulder Field is cool, worth a visit if in the area.

Very easy trail. It is mostly a dirt/gravel road with some areas that have deep potholes that are avoidable most of the time. We were in a Jeep Wrangler and My sister and her boyfriend were behind us in a Mitsubishi. We encountered some other people on the trail including cyclists and dirt bikes. Overall a fun easy trail that leads to a nice parking area for picnics.

Pretty easy trail. Mostly gravel road with tons of deep potholes but enough space to avoid them, if needed. Some spots had some mud but not enough to get stuck. Overall fun but not very challenging.
