Trail Overview
Branching directly off the main FS 2200 access route, Woodpecker Ridge Road - FS 2200040 offers a highly scenic, well-traveled journey through the Willamette National Forest. The overall environment begins within a beautifully lush, dense evergreen canopy before dramatically transitioning into an exposed, striking silver forest recovering from the 2020 Lionshead wildfire. The public primarily uses this wonderful route to access the Woodpecker Ridge Trailhead, which serves as a popular gateway for hikers exploring the surrounding wilderness and seeking out scenic overlooks. As you steadily climb the winding gravel track, the thick tree cover gives way to breathtaking, expansive vistas. On clear days, travelers are rewarded with incredible, unobstructed views of Mount Jefferson and neighboring mountain peaks standing tall above the recovering landscape.
Difficulty
Earning a highly accessible Grade 1 difficulty rating, this is a wide, wonderfully maintained, graded gravel forest road that requires no specialized traction systems or elevated ground clearance to safely navigate. The driving surface remains consistently smooth and firm from bottom to top, making it easily passable under normal seasonal conditions. While there are absolutely no major obstacles, large rocks, or deep water bars to worry about, drivers do need to exercise caution on the upper sections. As the road gains elevation and becomes much more exposed in the recovering burn area, you will encounter several blind corners that require slower speeds, a polite driving etiquette, and careful attention to oncoming trailhead traffic.
