Trail Overview

Scar Mountain Road - FS 2266310 is a short and incredibly scenic drive tucked away in the majestic Cascade Range. The overall environment is a lush, densely shaded evergreen forest boasting a thick, vibrant green understory located within the Willamette National Forest, making it a delightfully immersive woodland trip. The public primarily travels this route to access nearby outdoor backcountry recreation, including the popular Scar Mountain and North Pyramid hiking trails. Although it is a relatively short 1.4-mile journey, the route is wonderfully quiet and provides a deep sense of backcountry isolation. Please note that while the road offers a peaceful escape, it eventually comes to a firm dead end where the path has been deliberately blocked by large boulders and downed logs at an old washout to prevent further vehicle access, providing a natural turnaround point.

Difficulty

The trail surface generally consists of a narrow, packed dirt and gravel out-and-back spur that is nicely shaded by the forest canopy. However, despite the mild rating, drivers must remain vigilant for several notable obstacles pictured along the route. You will need to carefully cross a shallow, rocky stream bed and navigate through a noticeably washed-out section where deep, uneven rain ruts and loose cobbles have eroded the track. Additionally, be prepared to encounter large fallen trees partially blocking the road, as well as a definitive barricade of large boulders at the trail's terminus. To keep your undercarriage safe, simply maintain a slow, steady momentum through the creek and the rutted washouts.
