Trail Overview
Niagara 20 offers a quick mountain drive with views of the Santiam River canyon. Spanning 2 miles, the trail climbs steeply from 2,547 feet to 3,863 feet through areas recovering from the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire. The initial climb features loose gravel and washboards, with several dispersed campsites along the way.
The upper section narrows with tight brush and includes a small, seasonal water crossing that can swell during heavy rain or spring snowmelt. High-clearance, 4WD vehicles are recommended, especially during winter when snow and erosion can alter conditions.
Difficulty
The higher up you get during the winter, the likelihood of more snow is a possibility. And in one spot, there is a tiny water crossing. But during the rain and snow, it may be bigger. There is nothing too difficult though, just water crossing over the road, but it is very possible. Water erosion to the road can be relevant as well due to maintenance during the winter times. The road gets a little tight up top, so if you like your paint all nice and scratch-free.
History
The surrounding forest and landscape were heavily impacted by the devastating Beachie Creek Fire in 2020. This historic wildfire dramatically altered the local ecosystem, and visitors today can observe the ongoing natural recovery and forest regeneration throughout the canyon.
Access Description
This route is best suited for high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles. During winter and early spring, the higher elevations are highly susceptible to heavy snow accumulation and increased water erosion. The small water crossing near the end of the trail can swell significantly during rain or snowmelt, and the road becomes narrow and tight with brush near the top, which may result in minor scratches to wider vehicles.
