Trail Overview

The road is sufficient for virtually any vehicle, but the 25 miles of gravel and washboard may leave some wanting to air down to add comfort, and there is a spot to do that at the start of the trail. As you head in, you will go past the school as you take the left, then right turns. After passing the small development, you'll take a left hand turn on to Leslie Gulch Rd. You'll start to encounter more of the canyonland terrain with multiple trailheads on the side of the road. Towards the end of the road will be the campground with a handful of campsites. Just past the campground is a boat launch perfect for cooling down after a day in the hot terrain. Quickly changing weather in Eastern Oregon can, and will yield flash floods and leave the roads potentially impassible.

Difficulty

Easy roads, but AWD/4WD are preferable especially in inclement weather.

Most of the road is in excellent shape with a few washboards and pot holes along the way. There are a couple of spots along Leslie Gulch that are washed out. Most of the hikes are still accessible by car, and high clearance SUVs and crossovers should be able to get across the washouts to the campground at the end of the road with no problems.

Overall a pretty easy going ride. Lots of washboards and rocky road, but nothing most vehicles can’t handle. 2 spots where there are slight washouts of ~10” deep ruts with minimal water.

Stormy at the begging, but very nice later in the evening. Easy trail with few options to stay in disperse camps.

A few other vehicles on their way out. Lots of washboard and spots that wash out. One small active stream crossing. Chunks of rock randomly lying about in spots. Be alert.

Washboard dirt road with blind corners. Deflate tires to 20psi (from 35psi) tame the washboard better. If camp over night (BLM) has free campsites sprinkle throughout and this is dry camping. Other campground has pit toilets and picnic tables butvthose maybe hard to come by during summer.
