Trail Overview
Hunters Trail #1349 is an intermediate dune route for riders and drivers comfortable with open sand navigation, linking South Jetty OHV Trail #1344 to Driftwood II OHV Trail #1380 over roughly 5.3 miles. The trail runs inland across open dunes, wind-shaped ridges, and scattered vegetated corridors with little defined tread, requiring terrain reading and directional awareness to stay on route. Loose coastal sand dominates and varies with weather, directly affecting traction, making high-clearance 4WD vehicles, ATVs, UTVs, and motorcycles all viable with proper momentum management.
Difficulty comes from shifting terrain and limited route definition rather than technical obstacles. Blind crests, reduced visibility from fog or blowing sand, and changing dune shapes increase risk, especially during busier summer months when multiple tracks can obscure the main route. Elevation changes are gradual but constant, and with few fixed waypoints, navigation relies on current OHV maps or GPS. The trail is open year-round under U.S. Forest Service management, though conditions can change quickly with weather and wind.
Difficulty
There are several water holes whose depth will vary with seasons and weather. The deepest observed when it was rated at the beginning of summer was about 24" deep, but the bottom felt firm. These are not moving water, just large puddles. These water holes are the reason for the 5 rating. The sand track itself, without the water holes, rates a 3 for areas of soft sand.
