Trail Overview
Branching northward directly off FS 58, FS 5800140 is a tranquil out-and-back woodland spur extending roughly two miles into the high forest. Managed by the Mt. Hood National Forest along the boundary of the Roaring River Wilderness, this corridor meanders through an exceptionally lush evergreen canopy dense with mature hemlocks, towering firs, and flourishing native ground cover. The single-lane road consists of a primitive packed dirt and crushed rock surface, with a difficulty rating of 2. Recreationists navigate this peaceful corridor primarily to access the popular Pyramid Lake hiking trailhead or claim the secluded, primitive campsite located right at the terminal cul-de-sac. Dappled sunlight and scenic forest immersion accompany the gentle ascent all the way to the turnaround loop.
Difficulty
Rated 2, this spur road is non-technical but calls for attentive driving and a measured speed. The track features mild slope changes under 10% on a surface of hard-packed earth and scattered stones. Drivers will encounter periodic cross-drainage channels and erosion humps; angling across these dips at a slow crawl will easily maintain clearance and prevent undercarriage contact. Sections of the roadway narrow beneath closing vegetation, meaning light branch and brush rubbing along the vehicle sides is possible. Staying centered along the high crown of the road and straddling any worn depressions provides a smooth, drama-free trip to the trailhead.
