Trail Overview

FS 57400230 is a narrow, winding dirt trail that climbs steadily through a dense pine forest, starting from NF-5740. The road surface is a mix of dirt and small embedded rocks, offering a mellow but rustic ride that can be rough in places. The trail is only one vehicle wide for the first 2.3 miles, with low-hanging branches and tight clearances--wide vehicles will get pinstriped, so proceed with caution if you value your paint. After 2.3 miles, the road widens slightly, making for easier passing and turning. Along the way, you'll find numerous spur trails and dispersed camping spots, perfect for those wanting to explore deeper into the woods or set up camp in a quiet, forested setting.

Difficulty

Rated a 2 due to tight, overgrown sections, narrow track, and rocky terrain. High clearance is recommended, and 4WD may be helpful in wet conditions or for navigating the rockier patches. A great trail for campers and explorers who don't mind a few branches brushing the rig.

Started at RD42 junction which is the half way point to Detroit Lake or Government Camp. ~42 mile in either direction. Bring a chainsaw and minimum one gallon of gas and bar oil with at least 20" chainsaw bar length. Had to clear more than a dozen trees, from 14-20" diameter across the trail. A lot of fallen trees, mud puddles, narrow brushy sections, wash boards up steep hill climbs. Nothing to hard a standard 4x4 high clearance vehicle couldn't handle. No snow in the area. Area got pounded by all the rain and wind the region got 72 hours prior to doing this trail. Fun times!
