Trail Overview

The two ends of Shad Road that connect to Hurricane Gap are rather misleading. While it starts out as a relatively tame gravel two-track, the middle section is much more difficult than you may be led to believe in the first half mile at each end. A few campsites are scattered along each end, but none are available in the middle section of the trail. Expect very tight sections of rhododendron, washouts, and water-filled holes, some of which have soft bottoms. Many of the rutted sections will require either large tires and upgraded suspensions or driving with a tire on each side of the washout. Larger vehicles might have a harder time picking a line in places where the trail is narrow. A few of the deeper holes have drive-arounds, but these are narrow.

Difficulty

I had to use 4 low several times, and even then with aired down MT tires a few of the holes and washes were challenging. This trail can be very misleading and someone could be in over their head before they realized it. It also offers very few places to turn around. Without a spotter it takes a very slow pace and a decently outfitted truck.

Overall in good shape but gnarly in spots. Toughest spots are the giant mud holes towards the Paint Creek end. Not too tough on motos, but they look like a solid challenge in 4x4s but I don’t know anything about 4 wheel travel.

This trail was an absolute blast from ripping the SxS around corners to going full speed into puddles. This was my first time ever really taking it out on a trail and I gotta say the blue trail was difficult at times but nothing too crazy.

Only the northern 1/4 would be considered a “5”, and even those areas have easier bypasses. No water in the deep holes due to the drought.

Other reviews of trail were spot on. Beginning portion would lead you to believe it’s easy - however , once you get in a ways there are some decent moguls and holes that require some thought to get through cleanly. I don’t know if a stock height rig would get through- but I know it wouldn’t get through without serious dragging. Overall , it was a fun ride. I’ll be doing it again for sure.

easy to moderate until the end you need large tires or short wheel base to get through the last section of the trail where it becomes muddy and steep when you start a heavy decent would not recommend for in experienced drivers my xj went in 2wd with a 5 inch lift and 33s without winching using 4 hi I'n the last section of dirt terrain

We came in from the hot springs side, and all the fun stuff was at the end. There were 2 deep mud holes, got stuck in the second one, buried up to the running boards, had to winch out. There was a nice bypass around the holes though. Only other problem was like the other people have stated, the man made berms. Got high centered on the tallest one. The berms were really the only unavoidable part. Other than those, and if you took the bypass the trail is a 2. Tight in spots(pinstripes) especially for a full size.

Saw some grouse and a lot of sweat bees. One creek crossing which was not much but enough to cool off in and refill water.

I started this trail from SE to NE (not sure that helps.) 3/4 of this trail is a 3 when the weather has been somewhat dry like the trail was today. The other 1/4 is where the 6 rating comes from. A previous person called these “fire breaks,” so I am going with that terminology. There are 4 mounds right in a row that my Gladiator just barely got over (still bottomed out and I have a 2” lift and 35s.) A Wrangler would navigate it much easier with the shorter wheelbase. I am not convinced a stock Jeep would make it past that point, but I am definitely no expert. The conditions were easily navigated since they were most dry. If the trail had been really wet, then probably half would carry a higher rating. Narrow in areas, so expect the possibility of pin striping. I did see a black bear just before the trail started, but it ran into the brush as my truck got closer. A fun trail for a group.
