Rich Mountain Lookout

Rich Mountain Lookout is an easy, highly scenic spur trail perfect for stock four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and overland rigs looking for breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. Branching off from the well-maintained Hurricane Gap road, this short 1.3-mile route climbs steadily through dense Pisgah National Forest hardwood canopies, gaining 713 feet of elevation before reaching the summit at 3,660 feet. Along the ascent, the trail features a handful of rustic dispersed campsites that offer excellent opportunities for overnight stays in a serene woodland setting. The route is rated as a difficulty level of 1, presenting an easy drive on a primary unpaved gravel surface suitable for almost any high-clearance vehicle. Cell service is surprisingly reliable along the climb and at the peak, though travelers must pack in all of their own water as no natural water sources are available along the ridge. At the top, the newly reconstructed Rich Mountain Fire Tower stands fully accessible, providing visitors with a panoramic look over the Hurricane Gap area and the rolling state-line ridges.
