Trail Overview

Old NC-105 is a popular trail and is most well-known for its outstanding views of the Linville Gorge. It offers unparalleled views of the gorge and Table Rock Mountain. Numerous overlooks and campsites offer scenery nearly unheard of east of the Mississippi. Plan to spend 2-3 hours on the trail.

Difficulty

Old NC 105 is a dirt road with brief portions of poorly maintained asphalt. The trail is not technical, and while 4WD is recommended, a skilled driver can complete the trail in any 2WD vehicle with sufficient ground clearance. The trail is quite bumpy is some areas, so airing down for comfort is highly recommended.

History

Old NC 105 is a remaining portion of the original route of NC 105, which was established in 1926.

Haven’t been here in a couple of years but the road is decent As has been posted there are some areas of washout around the turns and to the edges. But an amazing day was had. We started on what I would say is the Southern end and went towards Linville. Several great camping options on both sides of the road. Got real busier towards the Linville Falls trail head.

Busy on the weekend, but not a problem unless you’re planning to camp — most of the prime camping spots were already taken. The gravel road is wide enough for two vehicles, with just a few sections (about three) that have larger potholes where high clearance is recommended. It’s still drivable with 2WD if you take it slow and pick your lines carefully.

Overall not a very hard trail. Super bumpy at places and going up hill and downhill is always a little struggle. Uphill and downhill turns are sometimes rutted out so they turn into little obstacles. Very steep climbs and downs hills. Very beautiful views if you can find a spot. Very busy trail full of people. The northern side of the trail is narrow and the southern side wide enough for two way traffic comfortably.

Simple trail but can get bumpy. Turns going up or down hill can be slightly washed out making for a little extra excitement on the otherwise relaxing trail. Camping places are abundant and plenty of people doing so.

Overall it was a pretty simple drive. There are some spots getting rutted out from people who don't know how to drive and they just spin their tires going up some of the steeper grades. It's easily doable in 2WD if you know what you're doing. If not, 4WD will help you climb right up.

There were a lot of people and it was hard finding a good scenic camping spot. Started raining on Friday let up Saturday morning then started raining again Saturday night very beautiful day on Sunday. A lot of the campers started moving out and we were able to get some really good scenic, pictures and views of the Linville Gorge and Lake James. Seen a lot of small cars having some trouble, making it up the steep incline and over the ruts otherwise the road is very well maintained and freshly graveled. Looking forward to visiting again hopefully getting a better campsite with a view.

Fantastic drive. 4wd not necessarily. Only 2 spots where clearance would be issue for passenger vehicles. Stock 4x4 is fine. Washboard in 2 locations. Around 50 vehicles on trail. Highly recommended trip

Easy trail stayed mostly in 2wd in my Tacoma expect for some parts uphill switched to 4wd. Rained recently so some of the camping spots were muddy. Was busy next time I would come earlier to get a good camping spot.

Fairly smooth until after wisemans view, rain has washed out and rutted some of the trail. anything higher clearance will make it up this comfortably. Lower clearance SUV's just need to pick the best lines.

The roads were generally in good condition, with only minor water damage in some areas. While the route required low technical skill, a vehicle with sufficient clearance was necessary for certain sections.

This is my first time returning since the hurricane. There are a lot more trees down in the forest, but the road is completely clear. There are a lot more campsites now and some of the more popular ones have now been covered in trees. There are crews still out here, clearing trees from some of the parking lots and hiking trails. The road appears to be recently surfaced as there are not a lot of ruts or washouts from heavy rain like there have been in years past. Saw a Tesla model S on its way up doing it without any problem, but I’m sure they got a few scrapes on the underbelly.
