Trail Overview

Baggetts Lake Lane is a longer Forest Service road that runs north to south, providing access to a large portion of the Sandhills Game Lands. In addition to general access, the midpoint of the trail leads to the field trial grounds center, a military memorial, and nearby horse stables. The central section of the road is wide and well-maintained, allowing for easy travel to these locations. In contrast, the northern and southern ends narrow into more of a double-track and feature small to moderate obstacles. The most challenging area is a short hill with a rut and minor washout that can place vehicles slightly off-camber. With careful driving, this section remains minimally difficult, though caution is advised. Other minor challenges include scattered patches of loose sand, small ruts, and occasional puddles that vary in size depending on weather conditions. Because the middle portion of the trail provides access to popular areas, it can become relatively busy. Even though sections of the road can be driven at higher speeds, careful and attentive driving is essential.

Difficulty

The majority of the trail is relatively easy; however, a few sections may present challenges depending on vehicle capability, weather conditions, and overall trail wear. The most difficult area is a short hill that contains ruts and a minor washout, creating a loose, sandy, off-camber climb. Due to the terrain, weather can alter this section over time, though the ruts are generally no deeper than about 10 inches. With careful line choice and steady driving, much of the difficulty can be minimized. That said, appropriate tires and adequate ground clearance should be considered before attempting this section.

The trail was dry throughout, consisting mostly of sand—about 95% of it. I managed around 90% of the trail in 2WD, though I did get stuck once. Switching to four-wheel-drive easily resolved the issue. It’s a very easy route, especially in a stock four-wheel-drive Colorado ZR2. However, be aware that after heavy storms, it’s possible to get bogged down and stuck due to the deep sand.
