Along the way, you'll pass the historic McIntyre Blast Furnace, one of the remaining landmarks of Tahawus ghost town. While you can drive to the gate, you'll need to continue on foot to explore the rest of the ghost town. Numerous informational signs throughout the area highlight the rich industrial and natural history of the region. The road follows alongside the Hudson River, passing beautiful marshes, ponds, and river views before reaching the trailhead. This area marks the beginning of the Hudson River, making it a fascinating destination for both history and nature. Between the historic remains of Tahawus and the headwaters of one of New York's most iconic rivers, this is one of the most historically significant drives in the Adirondacks.

Difficulty

This trail is rated 1/10 due to the smooth, well-maintained gravel and dirt surface with no significant obstacles. It is suitable for nearly any vehicle, with the main attractions being the incredible history, hiking access, and scenic views rather than technical driving.

History

Tahawus began as an iron mining settlement in the 1820s, established after rich deposits of iron ore were discovered in the heart of the Adirondacks. The community grew around the nearby McIntyre Blast Furnace, where iron was smelted for only a short time before the operation proved too remote and expensive to remain profitable. The village was largely abandoned by the mid-1800s. Tahawus saw a second life during World War II when large deposits of titanium-bearing ore were developed to supply the aerospace and defense industries. Mining continued for decades before operations ceased in 1989, leaving behind the remains of company buildings, industrial infrastructure, and the historic blast furnace. Today, Tahawus is a fascinating ghost town where visitors can explore the remnants of New York's mining history while also standing near the headwaters of the Hudson River.
