Trail Overview
This road begins by passing through private property around Goodnow Flow, but eventually enters the Adirondack Forest Preserve, which sits on the south side of the road. At this point, the northern side of this road still borders private land, so be sure to respect all posted signs and remain on public roads. The trail serves as an access road to the Essex Chain Lakes Primitive Area and is mostly a dirt two-track before transitioning to a fully gravel surface near the end. The drive is easy, with only very minor washouts, potholes, and small exposed rocks along the way. The route climbs and descends gently through the forest, alternating between dense woods and small open meadows. You'll cross three one-lane bridges and find a few roadside camp spots and pull-offs along the way. The trail ends at a gate just beyond the intersection with Deer Pond Road; however, you can turn onto Deer Pond Rd and continue on to the Essex Chain Lakes Primitive Area.
Difficulty
This trail is rated 2/10 due to the mostly smooth dirt and gravel surface with only minor potholes, washouts, and small rocks. Most vehicles can complete this route with ease in dry conditions, with the primary considerations being private property boundaries and seasonal road conditions.
