Trail Overview

Skeen Road is a maintained gravel road that cuts through the Permian Basin. It has oil field traffic due to the drilling done in that area. There are some rough areas due to washouts. There are no concerns except when it rains, and it can be done in 2WD. You'll witness some southern New Mexico desert beauty along this path, with pump jacks and windmills along the road. Watch for livestock because it is open range. If done early morning or late evening, you can catch a beautiful sunrise or sunset. There is no camping along this route.

Difficulty

The only concern for this road is rain creating washouts and slick mud. There is some oil field traffic, but the road is wide enough for 2 vehicles.

This is oilfield, period. Caliche roads, with rocks, holes and sand, dry a 2 wheel drive with some clearance can go but washboard ruff road. Times of heavy oilfield traffic and nothing but oil and gas wells. Cool to see the amount of work done back here. If it's muddy, 4 wheel drive and good tires.
